Recently, for the first time on the national television station of the Republic of Moldova, TV Moldova 1, on the show "În Context", Eugenia Gusilov discussed with Radu Osipov about the AggregateEU mechanism. Its purpose is to facilitate the matching of natural gas demand and supply under the most advantageous conditions possible for European natural gas buyers through demand aggregation.
Proposed in 2022 and operationalized in March 2023, the platform launched its first joint gas purchasing call, and the results of this auction are very encouraging: aggregated gas demand reached 11.6 billion cubic meters (Bcm), the volume of offers from suppliers stood at 13.4 Bcm, and offers that found a counterpart reached 10.9 Bcm.
Out of the volume to be contracted, 8.7 Bcm represents pipeline-delivered gas and 2.2 Bcm represents liquefied natural gas (LNG). The actual commercial contracts are concluded outside the platform between the directly targeted parties due to commercial sensitivities, and the European Commission does not own the gas.
The mechanism benefits small countries and companies the most, as they no longer have to compete with large buyers in Europe, but instead buy alongside them. Although designed for EU countries, the platform is also open to operators and companies from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
