In a recent analysis on B1.ro regarding the ongoing energy crisis, where drought affects electricity production from hydro and nuclear sources, Eugenia Gusilov highlighted that the root cause is the Romanian state's inability to plan, design, and execute new industrial projects on time.
Energy security must be approached in layers. When coal capacities were withdrawn, the plan was to replace them with new gas plants, but many remain uncompleted.
An inventory shows major delays:
- Iernut (Romgaz, 430 MW): scheduled for 2020, still not ready.
- Mintia (1,700 MW): declared a project of strategic importance, not yet activated.
- Isalnita (850 MW) and Turceni (475 MW): Oltenia Energy Complex projects funded by 900 million euros from the Modernization Fund, supposed to be ready in 2025.
Total missing new gas capacity amounts to 3,455 MW. With this capacity connected to the grid, the temporary shutdown of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant (1,400 MW) would not have posed a problem for the system.
