The European Commission has decided not to intervene this time, choosing not to pressure Ukraine to continue the transit of Russian gas, even though it could contractually be extended. Meanwhile, the government in Kyiv has stated unequivocally multiple times this year that it refuses any commercial relationship with Russia and no longer wants Russian gas to transit its territory.

Slovakia has alternative solutions available, albeit at a higher price, and Austria holds contracts with alternative suppliers. Hungary has been receiving the majority of its Russian gas volumes via TurkStream for a year. Consequently, the only entity left without a safety net at this moment is Transnistria.
