Romania Energy Center (ROEC) has the pleasure to invite you to THE event of fall 2018 in Romania: a conversation with the renowned American professor of political science John J. Mearsheimer about his latest book The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities, expected in bookstores worldwide starting with September 25.

A living legend, the American professor is one of the most important theorists of international relations of the 21st century. His ideas form the object of study in every handbook on international relations, a must-read for all political science students. Generations have been schooled on the writings and analysis of John Mearsheimer – a world class thinker and founder of the offensive realist school of international relations. His writing has shaped theory, policy and public debate on many foreign policy aspects. A landmark name in security issues and international politics, John J. Mearsheimer is the author of 6 books and numerous articles published in the most important Western journals and magazines, like International Security, The National Interest, Foreign Affairs and the London Review of Books, and op-ed pieces for the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.

This is the first visit of professor Mearsheimer to Romania and marks a milestone for our academic and think tank community. The event is part of the ROEC Bucharest Talks project which aims to engage the biggest names of our time in meaningful conversation on current affairs topics and connect Bucharest to the global intellectual elite of our times.

BOOK TEASER: In this major statement, the renowned international-relations scholar John Mearsheimer argues that liberal hegemony, the foreign policy pursued by the United States since the Cold War ended, is doomed to fail. It makes far more sense, he maintains, for Washington to adopt a more restrained foreign policy based on a sound understanding of how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad. It is widely believed in the West that the United States should spread liberal democracy across the world, foster an open international economy, and build institutions. This policy of remaking the world in America’s image is supposed to protect human rights, promote peace, and make the world safe for democracy. But this is not what has happened. Instead, the United States has ended up as a highly militarized state fighting wars that undermine peace, harm human rights, and threaten liberal values at home. Mearsheimer tells us why this has happened.
